Face Cleansing
For most of human history, cleaning oneself was more about spirituality and ritual than about any modern idea of health and beauty.
We believe skincare should be an extension of caring for your health. This means everything that you apply to your skin, and what you wash with should be carefully considered in terms of how they can benefit your health and care for your skin in the most gentle yet effective way, without synthetic and health disrupting chemicals such as sulfates, mineral oil, fragrance, parabens, alcohol, acids and more.
Our skin barrier naturally helps to prevent moisture loss, protect against environmental aggressors, and maintain a healthy skin microbiome (yes, you can have a million to a billion important microorganisms that live on just a square centimetre of the skin). A compromised skin barrier, however, can lead to dryness, irritation, inflammation, signs of premature ageing and skin conditions such as eczema and acne, as bacteria can penetrate the skin more easily.
How much cleaning does our skin really need?
A lot of cleansers and soaps dry the skin and alter the balance of the skin barrier. In fact, for a long time we have been made to believe that the more foam a cleanser produces and the more of a “squeaky clean” sensation it leaves on the skin, the better the cleanser. This might sound good if you have oily skin, but the fact is, the body always seeks to normalise its processes to balance and heal, so when the natural oil content is removed, it responds by producing more oil to compensate for the loss.
If you have dry skin, the more you wash, the more you will have to moisturise. It’s a vicious circle. Anything that leaves the skin drier and more porous heightens the potential for reactions to irritants and allergens.
Many people today over-wash and double cleanse and scientific studies show that there is a link between too much cleansing and some of the most widespread skin problems such as dry and sensitive skin.
Why oil cleansing is so beneficial
To maintain a healthy skin barrier and pH level it is crucial not to strip the skin by over cleansing or using harsh products. A daily cleanser should be simple and gentle. Oil-based cleansers are excellent as botanical oils are able to deeply decongest without disrupting the skin balance, and effectively removes excess oil and make up.
Oils mixed with anti-bacterial and antiseptic essential oils are great to kill off any unwanted microbes and inflammation-causing bacteria without altering the skin’s own microbiome.
